Energy charges (the big one)
This is units consumed × your slab rate — usually 60–70% of the bill. Your slab rate depends on your consumer category (lifeline, protected, non-protected) and total monthly units. Pakistan applies one slab rate to all units, so crossing into a higher slab raises the rate on every unit, not just the extra ones. See tariff rates.
Fixed charges
A monthly charge based on your sanctioned load (in kW), printed on your bill. For 2026 NEPRA set domestic fixed charges from Rs 200/kW (protected, low slabs) up to Rs 675/kW (higher slabs). Lifeline consumers pay no fixed charge.
Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA / FCA)
Fuel costs change every month, so NEPRA allows a monthly adjustment — it can be positive (added) or negative (a refund/credit). FPA for one month's fuel cost typically appears on a later bill. Because it varies, no calculator can predict it exactly.
Taxes and fees
- General Sales Tax (GST) — 18% on the taxable portion of the bill (energy + fixed + FPA and most other charges).
- TV/PTV fee — a small fixed monthly fee collected through electricity bills.
- Surcharges — financing-cost and other surcharges appear as separate lines on some bills.
- Meter rent — a small monthly amount if the meter belongs to MEPCO (not all consumers are charged this).
Due dates and late surcharge
Your bill shows two amounts: payable within due date and payable after due date. Paying late adds a surcharge (a percentage of the bill), and repeated non-payment can lead to disconnection — so the due date is the single most important number on the bill after the amount.
Reading the meter section
Units = current reading minus previous reading. If the bill says "estimated" or "average" instead of an actual reading, the units are a guess based on past consumption — you can request an actual reading or submit your own meter photo through the Power Smart app (by the Power Division).
